Old friend hangs in!

Most people who have been on safari with me in the Timbavati over the last 9 years has probably spent time with a beautiful leopardess called the Rockfig Female. Sadly things haven’t gone her way over the last few months.

This female has been one of the most successful leopards in the reserve and has successfully raised 4 different litters in that period.

A few months ago she was involved in a massive fight between a new male leopard looking to set up his territory, to which she took exception. We watched in horror as the wounds she had inflicted on her slowly developed into a large infected mass on her right ear. This tumorous growth caused her immense discomfort and we watch her health deteriorate rapidly. I remember seeing her a few weeks back and thinking it would be the last time I would watch one of my favourite characters in the Timbavati. How we underestimate wildlife!

This weekend whilst returning to camp for breakfast, I spotted a tail hanging down from a tree. When we approached I immediately noticed this leopard look a little odd, and then I saw that it was Rockfig, minus her right ear. The growth must have eventually caused the ear to pull free from her head and I am pleased to report that even though she is no longer Ms Timbavati, her health is looking good and the signs of infection are nearly all gone.

These animals are amazingly resilient and it just goes to show you that you can never right any animal off. I wish her a speedy recovery and hope I have the privilege of looking into her eyes again for many years to come.
